5 Critical Ways to Protect Your Hands

Boxing training has so many benefits, however we need to take care of our hands.

  1. Wrap hands with care — focus on protecting the knuckles, wrist, and thumb. Take your time to wrap well. Wash your wraps regularly to prevent bacteria forming in your gloves.
  2. Use proper gloves. Gloves should have adequate padding on the knuckles, and fit your hand well. A snug glove will be most comfortable. Consider the design — your finger tips shouldn’t be cramped, and your thumb shouldn’t feel like it’s in a bind. Dry your gloves after use to prevent bacteria forming in the gloves.
  3. Strike targets with your wrist and elbow behind the fist. Make contact straight, not hyperextended. Keep your hand closed when making contact.
  4. Build your tolerance for impact. Condition your hands for impact gradually. Don’t show up on the first day and hit targets as hard as you can.
  5. If it hurts, stop, especially if it’s a sharp pain. There are plenty of things to do in the gym if you have hand pain. For example, you can shadow box. If you experience a “bad” or “worrisome” pain, stop. Better to take a little caution than to cause a full injury because you weren’t listening to your body.

Take care of your hands, and your hands will take care of you!
