Olympic Boxing Qualifiers Begin Soon

Boxers from around the world will soon begin their quest to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.  Boxers on Team USA have two chances to qualify for the Games, either  through the Americas Continental Qualifying tournament or the World Qualifying tournament.
The Olympic Channel recently announced they are streaming all boxing qualifiers. Watch online without TV or cable subscription at www.olympicchannel.com.  The Olympic Channel’s live streaming schedule is as follows:
  • Africa Continental Qualifier in Dakar, Senegal: February 20-29
  • Asia/Oceania Continental Qualifier in Amman, Jordan: March 3-11
  • Europe Continental Qualifier in London, Great Britain: March 13-23
  • Americas Continental Qualifier in Buenos Aires, Argentina: March 26 – April 3
  • Last Chance World Qualifier in Paris, France: May 13-24
Boxers qualify by name, which means that once they qualify, a boxer is locked into the Olympic tournament as their country’s designee. No other boxer from their country may take their slot.
Each country may send one boxer per Olympic weight category to their respective qualifying events.  Team USA has announced the following 13 boxers will attend qualifiers:
  • 51kg/112lbs: Virginia Fuchs, Houston, Texas
  • 52kg/114lbs: Anthony Herrera, Los Angeles, California
  • 57kg/125lbs: Andrea Medina, San Diego, California
  • 57kg/125lbs: Bruce Carrington, Brooklyn, New York
  • 60kg/132lbs: Rashida Ellis, Lynn, Massachusetts
  • 63kg/138lbs: Keyshawn Davis, Norfolk, Virginia
  • 69kg/152lbs: Oshae Jones, Toledo, Ohio
  • 69kg/152lbs: Delante Johnson, Cleveland, Ohio
  • 75kg/165lbs: Naomi Graham, Fayetteville, North Carolina
  • 75kg/165lbs: Joseph Hicks, Grand Rapids, Michigan
  • 81kg/178lbs: Rahim Gonzales, Las Vegas, Nevada
  • 91kg/200lbs: Darius Fulghum, Houston, Texas
  • 91+ kg/+200lbs: Richard Torrez Jr., Tulare, Calfornia
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are scheduled for July 24 – August 9. Boxers will be among the more than 10,000 athletes from 200 nations competing for 339 gold medals in 33 sports.  In addition to traditional summer sports such as athletics, boxing, gymnastics, and swimming, Tokyo 2020 will feature five new sports: karate, skateboarding, softball and baseball, sport climbing and surfing.
